The Homework Project provides educational support for needy children in the poor villages of rural Romania.  Twenty years after the fall of Communism, Romania remains the poorest country in Europe. Services to the population are uneven, most especially in rural areas. Children are at greatest risk because they become discouraged and drop out of school at an alarming rate. The Homework Project hopes to curb this trend by offering educational assistance to keep youngsters on track with their learning.

Online Giving is possible through a secured server on the Epiphany UCC website.  Follow this link and select Romanian Fund.  The online giving allows you to make your contribution in installments if you wish.

In our centers, children gather after the close of the regular school day. In a nurturing environment, they are given help with their homework, help with questions about the day‘s lessons, and a good warm meal – often the only one of the day for many.

Epiphany United Church of Christ in Chicago first began this program in 2004.  The church sponsors centers in three villages in northwest Romania.  At present the program serves around 65 children each school year.

There are many ways to become involved in the outreach in Romania.

You may wish to become a sponsor of an individual child through THE HOMEWORK FAMILY PROGRAM:

Homework Parent: $200 per year
Homework Grandparent $100 per year
Homework Aunt/Uncle $50 per year
Homework Cousin $25 per year

With THE HOMEWORK FAMILY PROGRAM you have the opportunity to select a child from our list to names with photos so that you may correspond with them if you choose.

You may wish to sponsor a teacher for $ 1,800 per year; a teacher‘s aide for $1,000 per year. You may wish to provide food for a center or supplies.  You may wish to cover the costs of heating during a winter that is like that in Chicago.  Your level of involvement is your decision and is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.  All contributions are greatly appreciated.

Creating A New Center: If your organization wishes to open a new center in a needy village, yearly costs run about $5,000 per center.  This provides a teacher, a teacher-aide, supplies, desks, chairs, building maintenance and food.  The centers operate from September to the end of May.  Members of the Epiphany UCC Mission Team will gladly assist with helping with the setup of a new center.  We are currently in the process of identifying new villages in the area for expansion of the program. A member of our team will visit your organization to answer questions and discuss setting up a center. “We can do this, one village at a time.”
